OOC Discussion: Pet Peeves in RolePlay

Post  Sparrow Michigan on Fri Jul 01, 2011 2:55 am

Parker Tylman: for tonight, lets go slower. no big learning speech. i want to know what ur pet peeves are about rp. be very general cuz we have done them, so our talk stays positive

Bonnie15 Braumley: would you give us an example of what you mean?

Parker Tylman: i know that things bother some ppl and not others. i have sat watching Dallen play SL, and he will get bent over something while im sitting there thinking. wow that dont bother me

Kahlin Resident: I have one... and an example to go with it

Parker Tylman: for me one is: ppl tp'ing to the middle of a rp

Kahlin Resident: oh that is annoying

Parker Tylman: its hard to think when someone lands on ur head

Kahlin Resident: or how to RP them in

Perrin Greycloak: im usually staring at the chat window , probably wouldn't notice

Parker Tylman: see now that is what i am talking about..
Parker Tylman: what perrin said... in a rp.. someone tps, it would bother me but not him.. i think we need to know what others dont like or do like. we rp like a family here, so knowing is a good thing
Parker Tylman: anyone have an idea how to stop a tp into rp? what if ur friend said,, tp i want to rp too

Kahlin Resident: i have said no

Serina Galaxy: Send them the LM

Yseulte Mistwood: I'd send a landmark and have them walk to the rp

Kahlin Resident: they can walk up like a normal person and RP in

Serina Galaxy: then they can walk to the rp

Yseulte Mistwood: i mean no tp'ing during rp--in or out--is a basic etiquette thing isn't it?

Parker Tylman: i was in a rp one, someone got a IM from a friend to tp in. what she did was rp seeing that person in a distance, then leaving to go see them/ tp them in / come back w/ the person

Serina Galaxy: that would be cool

Kahlin Resident: okay that works

Yseulte Mistwood: works if the rp situation would allow it

Parker Tylman: its worked, u dont have to go far

Perrin Greycloak: well you see it doesn't bother me, but since it does others I wouldn't do it, i know i have done it once or twice in my early days here, but that was then

Parker Tylman: Yse is right. if ur doing a rp in bed, big romance... dont do that lol
Parker Tylman: who else can name a pet peeve on rp

Kahlin Resident: one of my biggest pet peeves is when there is a group of us with a good round robin rhythm going and we wait 15 min for the next line, thinking it will be this awesome paragraph and it turns out the person was in IMs and throws a one liner out.

Yseulte Mistwood: well that's just rude

Sparrow Michigan: absolutely

Kahlin Resident: (ims or something like that)

Parker Tylman: i would have a hard time waiting 15 minutes even for a book

Kahlin Resident: ok 5
Kahlin Resident: but you know what I mean

Sparrow Michigan: Someone new showed up in sim once and I waited and waited...and then her partner said, "she'll be back soon...she's taking a shower." lol

Parker Tylman: u hear something like that, and u know this is a person who respects no one so.. i might walk away
Parker Tylman: ok,, how could we handle the situation kahlin said

Yseulte Mistwood: yell CUT and talk to them about basic good manners

Parker Tylman: i would never wait.

Kahlin Resident: once I would IM them and ask if everything was ok and see why the delay and short throw.. but if they kept doing it I would walk
Kahlin Resident: sometimes you have to, it's part of the next motion tho

Yseulte Mistwood: Then you stop the rp or you IM or you rp yourself out and leave

Sparrow Michigan: If it goes on a long time with nothing posted, I'll sometimes IM them, "are you typing?"...but it depends on the person. Some I'll wait a long time because I know they take long to post and when they do, it's good.

Parker Tylman: we have some slow typists on the sim, rp w/ jonn and u settle in for the night

Kahlin Resident: and he is one that when the line lands.. its good

Parker Tylman: another pet peeve
Parker Tylman: who's got one

Serina Galaxy: I'm slow and cant help it, by the time I think of a response, we are on to something else, that is why when there is a group, I stay quiet

Bonnie15 Braumley: this is not here, but at another sim..there were people who never gave you a chance to answer..it was one liners thrown at the speed of light.

Kahlin Resident: OH that kills me

Perrin Greycloak: yea i have seen that before

Sparrow Michigan: In your case, Serina, you can ask people to slow down a bit. I've had people do it to me and I don't mind.

Kahlin Resident: cause then like Serina, I stay quiet

Bonnie15 Braumley: and Serina..I usually can only handle 2 other people to RP with or I can't keep up.

Parker Tylman: to me, i see one liners and i think : new rper. still needs to learn.
Parker Tylman: i was taught, my post needs 3 things
Parker Tylman: 1- what i see, 2- what i feel and 3 - what i say
Parker Tylman: thats got to be more than one line
Parker Tylman: u want ppl to see what u see in ur head, as the rp moves on

Bonnie15 Braumley: and sometimes I need to close my eyes to try and "feel" what my character does..that takes time

Parker Tylman: yes, exactly
Parker Tylman: ok, how can we stop the one liners,,, or the quick typist

Sparrow Michigan: I've seen some who type a lot and need more time to post type OOC "((please slow down everyone))" and that works for me.

Bonnie15 Braumley: like Sparrow said, just ask them to slow down
Bonnie15 Braumley: for one liners that are new..if you keep typing more lines they seem to follow the flow

Kahlin Resident: yeah, or ask them to give you a chance to respond

Bonnie15 Braumley: at the sim where I was, they were not new...and nothing I did would change it.
Bonnie15 Braumley: I think I could feel them roll their eyes at me for wanting to talk

Parker Tylman: its part of caring about the ppl u rp with. most here will slow down, and be glad to help u,

Bonnie15 Braumley: that's why..when Sandy brought me here...it was like the heavens opened

Yseulte Mistwood: I actually saw someone tell a new person "You use one liners. I don't rp with anyone that doesn't para"

Kahlin Resident: okay that is just rude..
Kahlin Resident: not everyone is a para

Yseulte Mistwood: I haven't rp'd there since

Perrin Greycloak: ok i wouldn't even bother messing with someone like that

Parker Tylman: that's their choice but, how do the one-liners learn if no one will rp w/ them

Bonnie15 Braumley: but there shouldn't even be a line...
Bonnie15 Braumley: it's divisive, hate that

Kahlin Resident: im with you bonnie

Sparrow Michigan: and frankly, RP writing is like a book...sometimes you have long narrative....sometimes quick punchy conversation. There is room for both.

Bonnie15 Braumley: and honestly..here, you are all polite and give people the chance to talk

Josephine Fairport points to Sparrow "Like she said!"

Bonnie15 Braumley: I don't feel pressured, that's big

Kahlin Resident: right you can have a short line that says alot.. but when I think of one liners i think something like - smiles, "Hi"

Parker Tylman: now, no one is saying a one-liner in the rp is bad. there are times when its fine, and expected. Say the tavern over there blows up and is in 20 ft flames. i would expect .. omg 's

Bonnie15 Braumley: the respect thing is huge, and here I think we have that. We have some different styles come through and they all seem to work together

Parker Tylman: most are able to rp w/ everyone

Parker Tylman: ok next pet peeve

Sparrow Michigan: I'm not sure if this happens to me more than most because I've played some younger characters and people tend to treat me young, but it drives me nuts when people try to send me out of RP...like, telling me to go out of chat range to do so something or to go another building to be safe. Standing in a room by myself while others are RPing ...not even able to hear...is..um..boring.

Parker Tylman: u mean like, " sparrow u shouldn't hear this, go to bed"

Bonnie15 Braumley: I've played child chars. too and had that happen. I think it's people's natural reaction to want to protect you.

Sparrow Michigan: yes....that sort of thing

Serina Galaxy: i agree with Bonnie

Bonnie15 Braumley: but how to stop it? I have no clue..I usually acted like I didn't hear them

Parker Tylman: could we not protect the child player by going to them and standing near them?
Parker Tylman: that makes it an action for me, not for them

Yseulte Mistwood: Your character IS 16. If the other characters think the rp situation is dangerous it's natural to ask anyone that might be hurt to leave.

Josephine Fairport: Ive had it happen before too, and I do get the whole protection thing, but sometimes it's been in a situation that wasn't even threatening.. "adults" talking and someone will say "shouldn't you be in bed" etc

Parker Tylman: might be natural in rl, but here it's asking someone to leave the rp

Yseulte Mistwood: That's different
Yseulte Mistwood: If the asking is a natural part of the rp scene then it's not out of line. And I wouldn't expect the person to leave chat range necessarily.

Bonnie15 Braumley: child chars. get things like that a lot..they get touched more, ordered around more...it's a pain sometimes.

Sparrow Michigan: Or have had people tell me it's time to go home...if someone sends me out of RP, there's no point in being in sim. My char isn't being allowed to participate. And I want to do more than just stand and listen all the time and not engage in a scene

Parker Tylman: ok but even then, are u not limiting them from rp? u are putting them away from other players

Sparrow Michigan: I don't think it's just an issue for child players...I think it can happen to anyone...it's just a bit more prevalent with younger characters.

Parker Tylman: i think we in our modern rl's think,, protect the young. we need to be medieval, children back then were into everything. they saw things that were terrible right next to their parents
Parker Tylman: now; i remind everyone that in rp, when u are told to do something, u can say ,, no i wont
Parker Tylman: dont let anyone tell u what ur character can or can not do
Parker Tylman: in medieval times, the front row of any hanging was kids

Josephine Fairport remembers that so so she can quote it to the King next time in court

Parker Tylman: king cant force u to do something

Sandy Southmoor note to self ....next time king grounds me....say no i'm not
Sandy Southmoor: i don't want to end up in the tower

Kahlin Resident: maybe you need to Sandy
Kahlin Resident: Perrin can climb the walls for ya

Perrin Greycloak: what tower, London is barely bigger than a village at this point lol

Parker Tylman: important thing to remember: once the line is out of ur mouth.. it dont belong to u anymore. u cant decide what others do w/ it

Parker Tylman: i could rp beating Perrin's head for 15 minutes.. but i can not rp if it hurts, if he falls down, if he hits me back, or he ducks each one
Parker Tylman: then, if he rps hitting me back, he dont get to decide what i do about it. as King, he might be jailed

Parker Tylman: more pet peeves

Kahlin Resident: OOC vs IC - drives me nuts

Parker Tylman: ok that u will need to explain

Kahlin Resident: (guilty of it of course) but when we say stuff OOC and then someone uses it IC for something... or vice versa, Something happens IC and it's brought into an OOC conversation with anger

Parker Tylman: OKKK getting back to ur conversation

Kahlin Resident: OOC vs.. IC

Ayzriel Resident: simple explanation..

Parker Tylman: if those NOT in the conversation could take ur talk to IM that would be good

Ayzriel Resident: a guy can say he is kissing you... but you have to say your kissing back
Ayzriel Resident: or its not RP
Ayzriel Resident: You cant control someone else's actions

Parker Tylman: we know so much about our rl story, the back story and the whys.. to keep ooc out is a challenge. u have to be ur character

Parker Tylman: anyone have suggestion to help keep ic

Kahlin Resident: keep notecards?

Parker Tylman: maybe but tough to stop n read them

Kahlin Resident: sticky notes?

Yseulte Mistwood: then how would i see my screen?

Ayzriel Resident: There is a hud you can get that displays notecards on your screen
Ayzriel Resident: like a flash card

Kahlin Resident: i am bad too, I mean we all joke about stuff OOC and talk alot about something but then if it accidently gets RPd we can really screw up a characters RP

Sparrow Michigan: It doesn't help to read the forums too. Sometimes in a scene, I'll want to post something but can't remember if my char knows the info or if I learned it reading a forum log...so err on the side of caution and don't post.
Sparrow Michigan: I can't stop reading the logs though...too much fun to see what others are up too.

Parker Tylman: 1- u could ask someone in IM.. if they remember
Parker Tylman: 2- u could answer in a very general way
Parker Tylman: 3- silence. lol that works till they tell u if they did it or not
Parker Tylman: i know i discourage IMs while in rp, but Ims w/ the ones u are rp'ng with to explain things, or encourage is good

Parker Tylman: OK.. ......
Parker Tylman: now we talked about what we dont like that others do,, lets talk about what we dont like, that we do, or have done. whats the biggest rp mistake u have made

Aphrodite Minoptra: Accidentally responding to someone's thoughts instead of their words.

Kahlin Resident: take ann RP personally

Parker Tylman: biggest one i made, was not researching my own character. i didnt know what i was suppose to do, so i did the wrong thing, and it blew up in my face
Parker Tylman: by not knowing what i should have about my own role, i ended up looking like the biggest fool

Kahlin Resident: i have done that with a topic.. like tried to RP with someone about something I only know a little about.. and look like a stupid head for making crap up that was wrong

Parker Tylman: most mistakes in rp u can fix. the one i made just changed everything for me. it made me look at rp different
Parker Tylman: in the long haul.. it was a good learning experience but at the time, i was swearing like a truck driver
Parker Tylman: wow i was mad
Parker Tylman: at myself for not knowing better

Perrin Greycloak: you know i do understand that, and have done that myself before
Perrin Greycloak: what I cant stand is when ppl cant let it go and just move on

Parker Tylman: sometimes its us that has to move on
Parker Tylman: i had to completely rewrite my whole character
Parker Tylman: this chick helped me.. she said to me.. who is parker
Parker Tylman: i said.. at this point, idk .... she said thats a shame cuz then he is nothing
Parker Tylman: hurt like hell but she was right, and i fixed it
Parker Tylman: the idea is..if u dont know ur own character, no one else will either
Parker Tylman: the ppl on this sim that i consider the best rp'ers.. are the ones where i can look at their character and know exactly who they are. like they are a good friend of mine
